One of the many things I’ve learned this year is to modify my behaviour to appease the ChatGPT gods.
It has been an invaluable tool – I used it to learn Adobe Premier Pro to edit a short film and in a storytelling module, I used ChatGPT prompts to write a story, develop characters, analyse plot holes and format it into an industry standard script (I’ll post the entire saga below – prompts & script).
When I was tasked with coming up with 20 questions for a pop quiz, I just didn’t have the time – so I asked ChatGPT to do it for me – Genius! Except some of the answers it gave me were incorrect. Yes, it does have the disclaimer that it’s not always right. But when I pointed out the inaccuracies, the revised versions were qualified with how technically ChatGPT was correct and implied I was being pedantic.
When I asked it to transcribe some audio for me it totally made stuff up and made excuses; “What happened is that I had to attempt a manual workaround since transcription tools were limited here, but clearly, the output I gave you was incorrect and fabricated, which is unacceptable.” and then, “You’ve reached your usage limit for today. Please come back tomorrow.”
So, I’ve learned to adjust my tone and delivery to achieve my desired outcomes when interacting with ChatGPT. This is a lesson I’ve started bringing to real-life situations, and I’m not so sure I’m happy about it. Sure, I’m less argumentative and more to the point, but where’s the craic in that?
