A pint of plain is your only man

I met with my oldest friends for a few pints of porter last weekend. It’s our thirtieth year together and we never fail to be amazed that we’ve made it this far.

Our opening gambit was the topic of Dry January, the consensus being we might not have many Januarys left so why would we waste them.

Once we’d caught up on each other’s ailments – as I believe is what people do once they’re over a certain age – we got on to our favourite topic – The Belgian Beer Festival.

We met in Brussels in the early 1990s and with a motley crew of musicians, journalists and general nutters, we’ve lived, worked and played together ever since. We’ve lost some of our crew along the way so each year we make a pilgrimage to Brussels for the Beer Festival where we drink fine beers, reminisce on the wildness of our youth and pay tribute to our departed friends.

Our trip has changed in recent years. What once was 48 hours of madness, barely seeing the inside of a hostel and bringing only a spare pair of pants, has now become a luxury apartment and lengthy afternoons sitting in Place St Cathrine, eating fine food and watching the wonderfully weird people of Brussels pass us by.

The Beer Festival is on the first weekend of September, but we book our flights in January. By September, as we gather at Dublin Airport, there’s a palpable sense of relief of that we’ve made it through another year.

    Poetry anyone?

I’m not really a poetry person – I could never get into the poetry I studied in school, I found most of it impenetrable and boring. But I’ve loved Pam Ayers and, thanks to her, I’ve always remembered to Look After me Teeth.   I also have a favourite Haiku:  A Haiku about being an…

  • No way, José

I have finally found something to say no to! Since starting my course in Ballyfermot, I have actively tried to take part in everything I can. I am that mature student who puts their hand up for everything. I am making the most of every minute and doing as much as I can in the…

  • Unwanted Gifts

A lifetime ago in a faraway land, I had these lovely neighbours from Brazil. She was an incredibly beautiful ballerina, and he was a sound engineer with a face made for radio. Using a mishmash of English, Portuguese and French, we became great friends, bonding over our love of music.   There’s an album by…

  • Under Pressure

The pressure is on! My first year of being a mature student is coming to an end and it’s time to get all those assignments finished and submitted. I’m swinging wildly between “Ah sure its grand, I’ve plenty of time”, to lying awake in bed panicking and scratching my newly erupted stress hives. I’m also…

    Big Birthdays

We had a significant birthday in our house this week. Our son with Down Syndrome turned 12. And what a 12 years it has been.  I cried in the lift heading up to the labour ward – I knew something big was about to happen. A couple heading out with their newborn, thinking I was…
