Poetry anyone?

I’m not really a poetry person – I could never get into the poetry I studied in school, I found most of it impenetrable and boring. But I’ve loved Pam Ayers and, thanks to her, I’ve always remembered to Look After me Teeth.

I also have a favourite Haiku:

A Haiku about being an Adult

I am so tired Where did all my money go My back hurts

(Author: Unknown – if you know, please tell me).

In the mid-eighties when my dad was redecorating the hall, stairs and landing, he wrote a poem on the wall before papering over it. When we moved away from the house a few years later it was one of the things I was most sorry to leave behind.

I now live just a few doors away from that same house and I often think of that poem, lurking behind the wallpaper, and wonder did the new owners ever find it.

I went to see John Cooper Clarke last week – now there’s a poet I can relate to. His work is fast and funny and most of it rhymes. I find that helps. Mike Garry was on before him and while I found his poetry a little less accessible, it did somehow manage to move me to tears a couple of times. But Jan Brierton was my favourite – that’s some poetry I can get behind.

Maybe I am into poetry after all. It’s always been there, hanging around in the background of my life. I found listening to it a different experience to reading it to myself. Reader beware – there may be a poem in me yet…

    Who cares?

I do. I care a lot. I care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and I’ve been doing that for the past 12 years. And tomorrow, I am being asked to vote in a constitutional referendum where it would seem our government doesn’t care at all.   As a campaigner for the rights…

  • Under Pressure

The pressure is on! My first year of being a mature student is coming to an end and it’s time to get all those assignments finished and submitted. I’m swinging wildly between “Ah sure its grand, I’ve plenty of time”, to lying awake in bed panicking and scratching my newly erupted stress hives. I’m also…
